Adventure Novel Editing

At WordsRU we truly know just how much effort, and highs and lows go into writing your adventure manuscript, and especially in bringing to fulfillment your very first, long-cherished novel. Irrespective of whether your novel is an e-book or one of adventure, romance, fantasy, science-fiction, Gothic horror, mystery, or historical, the team at WordsRU appreciates how strongly you feel as a writer about preserving your own distinctive ‘voice’ and keeping your fiction writing true to your original concept.

WordsRU understands that authors are looking to have their work edited by an editor who can improve the quality of their writing, and tease out that which may be proving elusive, but who will not change the style or mood of the writing, and certainly not alter the story itself.  Whether you are attempting your first novel or you already make a living as a professional writer, WordsRU’s professional editors and proofreaders will check your manuscript for trouble spots, leaving you free to concentrate on the creative side of your writing.

WRITING YOUR ADVENTURE NOVEL

Adventure novels also have much in common with science fiction and fantasy fiction (see our resource notes on fantasy fiction editing and science fiction editing). There are certain questions that apply to fiction writing generally, and are equally applicable to writing an adventure novel. They are really a series of questions, five in all: who, what, where, when and why. Answering these questions at the outset are the keys to writing your successful adventure story:

  • WHO is the protagonist?

This person will be your hero, heroine or main character. There will be others, and you should think about the relationship they already have with each other, or which they develop with one another.

  • WHERE does it all take place?

This involves making a decision as to location or setting - imaginary or real r a combination of the two.  If your story is strong enough, your readers will be transported to wherever you wish to take them.

  • WHEN does it take place?

Decide on the era or time period for your story.

  • WHAT is going to happen in your adventure story?

Develop a sequence of events that will be the framework for your story.

  • WHY does it happen?

There has to be a plausible reason why the events happen and there has to be a resolution to that sequence of events.

WHAT TO DO NEXT

Write an outline of your adventure story

The story outline will become your roadmap as you work through the writing of your manuscript.  At first simply describe the story’s opening, then what happens in the middle and how it ends. Once that is clear in your mind, fill in all events that take place between those three points – presto! You have a novel – or the very large makings of one!

Write your story

Allow for changes that may happen along the way; characters that may ‘want’ to do things that you had not first thought of or situations that may turn out differently. This is fine – just make a note on your story outline so that you remain in control, and your map tells you at every stage of the process where you are at and what’s happening.

Remember

Writing an adventure involves stepping outside of your self and your own experience. If you make the writing of your story an adventure for yourself, it will surely be one for your readers as well.

And finally,

If you are a first-time author, it is always best to complete your manuscript before approaching an agent or publisher.  Write your novel, work on it until it is in the best shape possible, then — to give it the best chance of that hoped for favorable reaction — ensure that it is professionally edited and that means turning to WordsRU – We edit, you take the credit!
