"My name was Salmon, like the fish; first name Susie. I was fourteen when I was murdered on December 6, 1973." The Lovely Bones |
A great opening line makes a novel memorable. “The Lovely Bones” was Alice Sebold’s first novel and her opening line has achieved a kind of immortality. It also immediately introduces the reader to the author’s voice — her unique style. WordsRU appreciates how strongly writers feel about preserving their own personal style and the desire to have their fiction writing remain true to the original concept. We understand that authors want an editor who can improve the quality of their writing, enhancing the overall presentation without altering the actual style of the work or its narrative. Whether you are attempting your first novel or you already make a living as a professional writer, WordsRU’s professional editors will check your fiction manuscript for trouble spots leaving you free to concentrate on the creative side of writing.
Our professional editors will give your fiction manuscript a grammar check, as well as correcting punctuation, tense, spelling and typographical errors. Where necessary sentences will be strengthened or reworked as may be appropriate to heighten the impact and flow of your narrative. Our fiction writing editing and proofreading will also ensure that word choice, sentences and paragraph structure are consistent and carrying your story in a fluid and readable way. In addition, during the course of the edit the balance, structure of the work, and its layout and overall presentation will be considered. There is no charge for the feedback you receive from the editors about these aspects - it is all part of the WordsRU service.
If you are a first-time author, it is always preferable to have completed your manuscript before approaching an agent or publisher. Write your novel, work on it until it is in the best shape possible, then — to give it the best chance of a favorable reaction — ensure that it is professionally edited and proofread before submission.
I needed the manuscript turned around really quickly. WordsRU did 140,000 words in under a month to a high standard and even made some suggestions for improving the book! |

Fiction Editing and Proofreading - Frequently Asked Questions
| Q: | I have not yet completed my novel but it needs work and I would like some feedback. Can you help? |
| A: | Yes, we certainly can. Suggest you let us have it for editing now and one of our editors will not only get the work into good shape, and ensure you are on track, but include feedback, comments and suggestions that you can take up in completing the work. |
| Q: | If you edit my story, can you guarantee it will be published? |
| A: | No unfortunately, we cannot. What we can guarantee though, is that your professionally edited manuscript is much more likely to receive a favorable reception from both agents and publishers alike if you can add “my manuscript has been professionally edited” to your cover letter. |
| Q: | I am a first time writer – can you give me some advice and tips about my writing? |
| A: | Yes. When the editing is returned to you, it will include Editor Comments that cover various aspects of the writing including any areas that may not be working as well as they should, and suggestions on how to deal with them. |
| Q: | Can you edit my book chapter by chapter, as I write it? |
| A: | Yes we can but it is not the best way to do the editing because it means the editor is to some extent working in the dark. Much of the way a work is edited is determined by the way the unfolding narrative, and its character and plot development and therefore later stages inform the earlier sections and changes may be made in the second or third run through the manuscript. If you must do it this way, then at least give us a few chapters at a time 10 or 15000 words as something to ‘work with’ . . . |
| Q: | What is the difference between a synopsis and a story outline? |
| A: | A synopsis gives a brief summary of the story, its main character and the plot highlights. A story outline is a much more detailed document. It outlines the framework for your story, all the characters and the key events as they unfold. It is invaluable to keep authors on track in the actual writing process. As things develop and/or change in the story, then you should note the story outline as well so that it really is an evolving overview guide to the process. |
