Freelance editing

WordsRU’s freelance editing team will review your writing, and proofread and edit all your documents whether they be academic papers; business proposals, reports and manuals; business letters or personal correspondence, and manuscripts in all genres. Many of our editors also have significant experience in proofing and editing for those writers who may experience ESL-related difficulties.

Editing or proofreading — is there a difference?

Yes, there is a difference.

Proofreading means checking to ensure your document is free from grammatical, spelling, punctuation, tense or typographical mistakes.

Although editing includes proofreading, an edit (copy edit, or line edit) is a much more comprehensive review of your document. As well as a check for grammar and punctuation, it will consider word choice, sentence and paragraph construction; tailoring text to better suit the purpose of a document, removing ambiguous or repetitive material and ensuring clarity, concision and consistency as well as logical flow and readability.

Structural editing, which includes both proofreading and the editing already described, will look at your document in overview for structure, balance and overall effectiveness in terms of achieving your purpose. The editor may offer suggestions for improving the layout of a document or the sequence in which the content is presented.  There may be recommendations for changes that will enhance the impact or persuasiveness of your writing to ensure the best possible outcome.

How do I know whether my document needs proofreading or editing?

Because proofreading is both the initial stage of a full edit, and also the final check of a document, the terms are often used interchangeably, and many writers are unsure as to what is best for their document. WordsRU’s online editorial service will take confusion out of the equation. There are many occasions where a proofread is requested but a document may need more intensive editing. On the other hand, a full edit is often requested but proofread may be all that is necessary.

WordsRU’s administrators will assess the requirements of each individual document you submit to us. They will note your concerns and assess what is required to make sure that your writing receives the appropriate level of service and that you do not pay for more than is necessay to put your document into top shape.

WordsRU have provided freelance editing in American, British, Canadian and Australian English for people around the world in locations as diverse as Chicago, Houston, Moscow, Calgary, Bristol, Norfolk, Denpasar, Darwin, Gold Coast, Naples, Port Moresby, Reykjavik  and Buenos Aires.
