“If you don't have the time to read, you don't have the time
or the tools to write.”

—Stephen King
American horror novelist and screenwriter (1947 - )

The best way to write well in any genre is to read extensively in that genre. In that way, you learn what works well for others and begin to discern what will work with your individual writing style. Whether you are creating a fiction or a non-fiction manuscript  — be it thriller, mystery, crime, autobiographical, biographical, self-help book, poetry, fantasy fiction, electronic book, article, cookbook, adventure, romance novel, science fiction, historical fiction, mystery, literary fiction, technical manuals or a horror story, reading critically in whatever field you intend to write makes you aware of the essential elements of creating story in that genre. As you read be aware of the way the narrative is structured and how it is being presented to you, and whether it engages you and why. Observing the techniques used by others in your field will lead to the discovery of what will work well with your own particular style.

The Key Element in Horror Novels

Fear is the core of any horror novel. And to understand fear sufficiently well to write about it means that you must know your own fears — what scares you, how you react and how you deal with it, whether rationally or not. In writing well about fears you must dig deep within your own and confront them without hesitation. The fear can be psychological but it should be something inexplicable; something that is not explainable through normal human experience. Irrespective of what form the evil takes or from whence it arises, it should be revealed very slowly; very gradually indeed. In this way, the horror is accentuated. In the horror genre, fear is explained by paranormal or supernatural means; usually a mysterious entity that offers other-worldly resolutions that are beyond normal understanding.

Some Helpful Hints

  • Know what scares you and write about it
This seems obvious, but you cannot write a true horror story unless you understand the composition of fear. Put yourself into the role of the main character and use your reaction and responses as starting points.
  • Learn the techniques of horror and suspense writing
This is another obvious one, but if you want to write horror stories, then you should be reading them and watching horror movies as well. By reading and watching you are learning what works and what does not. You are not looking for ideas for story lines, but the effective techniques of writing in the horror genre.
  • Timing and pacing
Learn how to develop suspense and build it gradually — work up to the scariest scene. Make sure your opening is attention grabbing and then build on it. It is important to pace the development of suspense so that the rhythm of the story is right and continues to keep your reader in a state of mesmerizing fascination. Introduce diversions at surprising moment to maintain the momentum.
  • Avoid the obvious including clichés
Think of original and innovate ways to set the scene for the horror to follow. Let your imagination run riot and remember, if must scare you.
  • Maintain your momentum
Once you are on a roll in writing your story, stay with it and keep the momentum. In this way you are intensifying the horror and you remain in touch with your characters and the developments of the plot much more easily.
