Attributes of a good thesis

 

 

  • An opening paragraph that serves to set the context for your thesis and ends with your thesis statement.

  • A contestable topic that proposes an arguable point, one with which people could reasonably disagree. A strong thesis is provocative; it takes a stand and then justifies the discussion it presents.

  • A subject that can be adequately covered in the format of the project assigned.

  • Specific and focused. Instead of music, think "American jazz in the 1930s" and your argument about it.

  • Asserts your own conclusion based on evidence. Be prepared for the evidence taking you to a conclusion that you did not expect – so be flexible. It is quite acceptable to change your point of view as a result of the evidence you have gathered.

  • A ‘map’ to guide the reader through your work.

  • Anticipates and refutes counter-arguments

  • Avoids vague language such as "it seems . . ."

  • Avoids the first person - "I believe," and "In my opinion" etc. Instead use “the researcher” or “the writer.”

  • A subject that people care about sufficiently to have a clear opinion. There is no point choosing a topic that is unlikely to evoke any opposition.
